All I want to know how many building permits he needed to do that.

Great job. Seriously.

Isn't he beautiful?

But yes, in America he would have been shot down for blocking
someones view in the Hamptons!

Oh, for freedom once again. About 100 years ago out here in Colorado a person could buy some land (or homestead) and build their own house WITHOUT getting any special permits or inspections. And it probably only cost about .5-1 year's salary to purchase the materials (whaver you couldn't just harvest from your land). Oh, for freedom once again...

My cousin Paolo helps patch the walls around the fixtures. This one is in the kitchen. You can tell because the walls are blackened from the cooking fires. The smoke is why the kitchen is in a separate building from the main house. My friend talked to me about chimneys. I'm thinking about that now.

Funny how you don't see the hidden hands in the pictures baby-stepping them.

Building codes have gotten completely out of hand and I suspect post FRN crisis popular pressure will get them cut back quite a bit.

Things like not allowing fire hazard shake roofs in dense areas that could cause a whole neighborhood to burn to the ground, or open sewage on the ground in cities that could cause cholera make sense, but they micromanage everything, change it constantly, even with no near neighbors, and it is going to be unaffordable, and become a issue to staying in office.

Some places are worse than others. Houston is rather better than most cities and both several counties in rural Texas and the county where I worked on my own house in rural Kentucky I have found relatively non invasive and sensible. I hear rural Oklahoma is not too bad either, but have not done any work myself there. It probably varies by county too.

The pressure for stupid codes often comes from non resident owners of property trying to attain higher resale value. Then there are neighborhood covenants that get really strange. Check for that category of draconian provisions on any property you consider, in addition to state and county and city (if any).

Just a BUILDING PERMIT (no utilities, etc.) costs $32,000 in my little town of 6,000 people. Things are way out of hand.

Re: 15 yr old builds windmill to power house

Don't forget the environmental impact studies. There are people in semi-rural areas here in California that want to build windmills, but they first have to get an environmental impact study to make sure birds and other wildlife aren't going to be killed. Once you factor that cost in, with the legal costs of filing with the EPA, it no longer becomes worthwhile. Only a hardcore clean energy advocate with lots of money to burn can afford a wind turbine or solar panels. Solar panels are often resisted by local government because of appearance.

Notice how environmentalists complain about our oil and coal use, but don't allow us to build anything that would lessen our dependence. They prefer we return to the stone age with no electricity or machinery at all.

My dad, who is a goldminer, did the same thing for over 10 years to power his goldmine, except he used a water wheel instead of a windmill. a running stream is a constant power source, day and night.

... try this on... we are dividing our farm property for a second residence, and the water tap (wells are illegal here) is $24,000 - just for a residential water TAP (a small hole with a piece of pipe).

Oh, for the days of freedom.

Pretty impressive ingenuity for some poor folks with limited resources. I agree that the "freedom" to build inspires this sort individual/family creation.

A 15-year-old boy has surrendered to authorities in India after allegedly performing a Caesarean section in a bid to set a record as the world's youngest surgeon.

Police had been hunting for the youth since arresting his parents last month.

His parents are both doctors and allegedly supervised the operation on a 20-year-old pregnant woman.

They are awaiting trial on several charges, including endangering human life.

The boy's father had said he set up the operation in order to get his son into

You might want to check the air intake for that bunker of yours, Mr. MacDonald--I think some fumes are getting through.
